Camarilla Symbol Camarilla Game ~ My First Position.

You've finally managed to catch the eye of someone up top and you're in line to get your first Position within the Court, Cairn or whatever. What do you do? Just follow our ten point guide to surviving your first day in office.

Don't Panic!
This is normally easier to say that to do, but be sure not to show any signs of panic! If you have been considered for a Position, whoever as put your name forward must be damn sure that you will be able to undertake your duty, and remember that at the end of the day being fired from a fictional position is a lot less important than being fired for real.

Find out what you can and can't do.
Go and find the ST and ask them to tell you what precisely you can and cannot do with your Position. Remember the ST will not lie to you, but other Characters might. The ST has no vested interests within the game structure other than to make sure everyone has a good time.

Find out who else has held the same Position.
Ask who held the Position before you, and go and ask them OOC what it involved from their point of view. Did they find themselves constantly getting into fights, making enemies or just dealing with things they didn't understand? Then ask yourself, can I do this job? If you can do this before you accept the position even better.

Get a Backer.
With the exceptions of Prince, Alpha etc, getting a Backer is an important part of holding any Position. Simply put a Backer is someone who will stand behind your decision when it makes you unpopular with the rest of the Characters. Many a Character has lost their Position due to lack of a Backer.

Get a Deputy.
You can't be everywhere at once, even though sometimes you need to be. If your position affords it, get yourself a Deputy to do the dirty work whilst you concentrate on the bigger picture. Just make sure they know the limits of their authority.

Know your limitations.
Sometimes a job is just to big for you to do on your own, so make sure that you get help doing it. You maybe required to go and hunt down every last Werewolf in the city, but it doesn't say anywhere in your job description that you have to do it alone. If the job requires it, use your authority to get others to give you back up. Just be sure to reward them properly when the task is done.

Show your authority.
If someone tries to muscle in on your field of authority, it's a safe bet that they may be after your Position. Show them who's Boss. Chastise the Character for crossing the line and make sure that everyone else hears you do it. If you appear to be showing pride in your Position, Characters are less likely to try and muscle in on your turf.

Don't back down.
At some point you're going to make a controversial decision and Characters are going to try and persuade you to back down over it. Don't! If you back down they'll see it as a sign of weakness. Stand by your decisions right and wrong and you'll get more respect.

Take note of who else is after your Position.
Position gives your perks that the rest of the Characters may not have, and you can be damn sure that some of them will be eyeing up your Position to get their hands on those perks. Take note of who's asking questions about you, they may be planning to make a move against you and act accordingly.

Retirement, not Redundancy.
You've pushed the limits of your Position and everyone is out for your blood. Don't give them the satisfaction! Remember, those who retire from a position do so with grace, whilst those who are thrown out don't. Retire gracefully and let people remember that the last thing you did was the right thing.
