Originally a small partnership in Manchester specializing in corporate based financial consultancy, it was purchased in 1995 by a large Indonesian conglomerate. From there it had an extensive investment of capital and began to represent a number of far eastern companies with interests in the UK and mainland European markets. When the Nakara Arcology opened in 1999 Van der Laan was the first company to move its offices into the site and has since then opened its customer base to the Staffordshire area and has taken full advantage of the investment opportunities in the county.
