Set up in 2004, Aquilla is the city's traffic-management provider. All around the city, blue cameras track traffic movements and this information is then processed by staff who use it to co–ordinate the city's traffic lights in order that congestion is minimised at all times of the day. Aquilla pride themselves on the quality of both their technology and their technicians accrediting their success in streamlining Stoke's roads on the interaction between the two: the machines provide the information; the humans make the decisions; the traffic moves in optimum flows.
Written into Aquilla's manifest is their commitment to the emergency services: their first priority is to facilitate the movement of these vehicles around the city. Whilst there are rumours that other cars can be given priority movement rating, this is unconfirmed by any source.
Aquilla are a privately owned firm who work under long–term contract to both Stoke–on–Trent and Newcastle councils. Their offices are in the Porthill area of the city, near to the A500.
