If John Winters represented the politically correct face of modern policing, then John Weide was his dark flipside. Little better than the criminals that he hunted in many eyes, Weide made a name for himself across the country by breaking up criminal organisations and bringing prominent criminals to task - often by shockingly violent means.
However, no matter what his methods he managed to get results. Recently he bought The Guardian (long a thorn in the side of the establishment) to task, although both his and John Winters' reluctance to be drawn on the method of his arrest did not stopped the questions. No matter what the papers said about him, Weide continued to do things his own way - and continued to get results.
But Weide is now dead - at the hands of John Winters. His legacy may be far longer reaching than he originally envisioned - a new Chief Constable.
